Pekka Hänninen has over 20 years of experience in research. He carried out
research at Tampere University of Technology (1986-1988), at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) (1988-1992) and at UTURKU (since 1992). He received his Ph.D. in 1995 with ‘New Techniques in Confocal Microscopy’. Since 2002 he is a Professor in Medical Physics and Engineering.
Pekka's main interests are microanalytical systems based on microscopy, biological micro and nanoimaging, nonlinear optics, modelling of microanalytical devices, and low level signal analysis.
Pekka published >50 articles and holds 22 patents some of which have lead into industrial production. Pekka is also the chairman of the Finnish Optical Society. -

Pekka Suominen (Ph.D.)

After receiving his Ph. D. in Physics, Pekka invented a new ion source concept based on special magnetic coils (ARC-ECRIS), which was quickly noticed around the world. A joint research project for development of such device was started and Pekka moved to work in a CERN (Genève, Switzerland).
After his time at CERN, Pekka started working for the magnet technology centre, Prizztech, Ltd. where he was responsible for developing large superconducting magnet storage devices. During this period Pekka invented the core concept behind Effmag.
Pekkas specialities are accelerator physics; especially Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources, magnetic field simulations, instrumentation, electronics, plasmas heated with microwaves, ion optics, high voltage devices, vacuum techniques, mechanical design and computer simulations.
Pekka is now working at CERN, Geneva for the second time. -
